Senior Tips for Staying Cool this Summer

Summer is in full swing and everyone’s feeling the heat in Albuquerque. While the summer means pool parties, trips to the river and barbeques with family and friends, the hot weather can be particularly dangerous for senior adults. If you provide care for an aging parent or loved one, Albuquerque Home Care Assistance provides some advice for helping them stay cool and safe this summer.

First, make sure your loved one is provided with plenty of liquids. The hot weather makes seniors more vulnerable to heat stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration. Check in with your loved one throughout the day and make sure they have easy access to water and other hydrating liquids. In many cases, seniors are unaware they are overheating and increase their risk for health complications. Also be aware that certain medications can make seniors more susceptible to heat-related problems, especially dehydration. Check with your loved one’s senior care specialist or primary care physician to see if they are at a higher risk for any of these problems.

Secondly, make sure your loved one wears loose fitting clothing. Recommended summer materials that are light and breathable include cotton and linen, which can be a big help in keeping seniors cool and comfortable. If your loved one is going to be outside at any point, have them wear a hat that shades their face.

Finally, try to monitor how much time your loved one spends in the direct sunlight. While sometimes unavoidable, walking in the direct sunlight can result in severe exhaustion at an expedited rate. Keep an eye out for signs of weakness, nausea, dizziness or heavy sweating as these are common symptoms that may indicate the need for medical support.
