Who says the fun has to stop once you’ve entered your golden years? If you or an aging loved one are looking for new and exciting ways to exercise, socialize and interact with others, the city of Albuquerque is filled with options. In fact, Albuquerque is home to six senior centers and two multigenerational centers that welcome children, parents and grandparents. This year’s membership costs an affordable $13 and grants seniors access to all eight centers, as well as the popular Palo Duro 50+ Sports and Fitness Center.
The various senior centers in Albuquerque offer something to satisfy everyone’s interests. Seniors who are interested in dance lessons can put on their dancing shoes and head to the Rio Bravo Center for ballroom, Latin and country dancing. Not only is learning a new dance a great way to exercise, studies show that seniors who dance regularly enjoy enhanced cognitive function and can even reduce their risk for dementia!
Another fun activity for seniors is attending one of the various classes held at the Albuquerque senior centers. Popular classes include an introductory to Spanish class which is held at the Tijeras Center, as well as a computer class where seniors can learn how to check email, read the latest news online, and video chat. At Albuquerque Home Care Assistance, we love that seniors are provided with opportunities to continue learning as they age and recommend that all of our clients attend classes whenever possible.
Of course, for those looking to mix and mingle, the senior centers often host a variety of events. From holiday parties to coffee and tea socials, seniors can stay social and continue creating meaningful relationships with peers. Plus, when meeting people through parties, classes and games, the entire process can feel more comfortable and less daunting.
If you or an aging loved one are looking for new avenues to meet new people and learn new things, one of the city’s senior centers might be the perfect place for you.
